While the BET hip hop awards were held on October 13th in Atlanta, it's never too late to give a fashion round up of some of these timeless outfits. It's taken me a while to wrap my head around what I have been seeing here. It seems that tom-foolery, like true grace, will never go out of style.

Lil Mama struts her stuff rather proudly, wearing the accessories for many different successful outfits rolled into one. Too bad none of them are the right ones for this one.

Beyonce has just released her own version of the most important fashion accessory: the sleek cell phone. Her new B-phone through Samsung will feature Beyonce ringtones and a special song on it just for buyers of the phone. Just when you thought her media onslaught had not one more cranny for exploitation, somehow Mommy and Daddy Knowles came up with something. I like her dress though, and it seems that she has backed off of the brown lace-front. Wonder why?

We already announced that West will be starting his own fashion line this fall called Pastelle, in a previous edition of the Black Looks fashion overview. West was just in Paris recently at all the high fashion shows, telling the world he is taking no prisoners in the fashion game. His fiancee, Alexis, also recently debuted her first clothing line.


They are serious about this. Maybe Kanye will be the first celebrity designer with some real fashion world credibility.



Maybe not.

Rihanna strikes a fierce pose as she walks the runway for the D Squared fashion house she so often is seen wearing looks from. Look at this pic from the show to understand her fear of nipple slips.

This look is much better than her tour costumes. Keep reigning supreme on the fashion scene, Rihanna! She is making it rain on all the other pop princesses in this regard. But I don't think there is room for anyone else under her umbra-ella-ella-ella. Looks like she is taking the top spot in fashion, and staying on top for herself alone.

Right now, this man is considered one of the top black designers in the world. Just like the underground rappers who always ask -- "Where are all the real MCs at?"-- this fact leads me to ask: Where are all the real black fashion designers?

Naomi Campbell has been putting the fashion world on blast recently for the fact that stunning black models and models of color are not getting their due. But Bryan Boy, one of the most popular bloggers on the Web, asked even more interesting questions:

"Now. Is it just me or is there a distinct lack of black designers in the NYC/London/Milan/Paris fashion arena? I'm sure there are black designers out there, other than Xuly Bet, no? If that's the case, where?"

While not trying to take away from Diddy and all he has achieved in the world fashion and fragrance, or the plight of models, we over here at Fashion Victim have to agree.


The question of black models is important, but the lack of real, non-celebrity designers is just as telling of the need in the high fashion world for a change.

Patrick Kelly was an amazing African-American designer from down-home Mississippi who entered and dominated the high fashion world during the '80s. He was the first American member of any color invited to join the governing institution of the French ready-to-wear industry. Long after his death from AIDS in 1990, Kelly is still remembered as a fashion genius by today's style professionals.



Since the death of Patrick Kelly, we have had very few black design stars representing in respected arenas, like Tracy Reese, who took it to the hoop loud and proud at the most recent New York City Fashion Week.

Black style has always been admired, copied, watered down and then mass-marketed, going from the streets to the runways and then back again, as high-brow people rock "urban" looks, and "urban" folks over-do it on lux logos to get that ghettofabulous feel that makes middle-class people blush. The recent Black Style Now exhibit documented this dynamic relationship between the high fashion world and the "street chic" spaces. Both have simultaneously been occupied by black tastemakers ever since the first slaves began copying and then embellishing the looks and the styles of their masters in the Cake Walk.



So with Baby Phat, Sean Jean, Rocawear, and House of Dereon, we see the high and "street" fashion worlds again colliding and mixing because of the world of celebrity. But this collision has seemed to leave little room for the real black fashion designer, who is the elevating source of titillating inspiration, rapture, beauty and self-expression on the luxury runways.

Are celebs to be our only high fashion representatives? It's great that people like Russell Simmons, Kimora, and 50 Cent have brought "fubu" fashions to the forefront, but at what cost to more serious design talent?

If Naomi, Andre Leon Tally, and Iman are going to address discrimination against black models, let's not forget the challenges faced by real black designers, not celebrities-turned-designers, who make the visions on the runways that models model. Ain't nothing wrong with "fubu," but what about a greater range of fashion possibilities for all of fashion's creators?

The Proctor & Gamble company, which makes Queen Latifah's make-up line for women of color (the CoverGirl Queen Collection), has just launched an interesting new campaign called: My Black is Beautiful.

This political-marketing campaign seeks to remedy the feelings black women have about negative self-perceptions of their beauty, and how they are perceived and portrayed negatively by others and the media.

There is a tab on the Web site called 'The Movement,' and a link called 'The Manifesto.' These are some strong, fighting words for a marketing campaign and a middle-of-the-road company. Yet, they are seeking to tap into what has essentially been a ticking time bomb of black female emotions that has gone unexpressed in public forums for centuries: our feeling that the collective that we are a part of does not find us beautiful, gorgeous, desirable, or feminine on a deep level.

While this campaign is clearly aimed at getting black women to buy their products, Proctor & Gamble has also donated $50,000 to organizations seeking to empower African-American girls.

Is this the right thing for P&G to do, in this way? Should a corporate operation seek to promote our cause? Is this just a superficial show of support?

I personally believe that the issue of black female self-esteem as expressed through beauty is too serious a topic for an advertising campaign, but I don't see anyone else doing it.
