Unlike many rappers in hip-hop who are obvious industry pinheads just trying to cash into the bank, Kanye West knows more. Yet, that is perhaps the very problem: he knows more and yet does nothing to actually fix the problem.
Barack Obama visited Morehouse College on Sunday to give a refrain on the responsibility of Morehouse Men and black America to find dignity and progress in self-reliance, a refrain that has simultaneously proven exciting and excruciating for African Americans over the last four years.
I'd believed that I was headed for greatness, but they had revealed in me a thing that was seemingly so dirty, so disgusting that my other talents paled in comparison to the supposed vileness of being a practicing homosexual. And for this they bullied me right out of the church.
I was a 25-year-old documentary filmmaker from New York working on a show for MTV. He was a 21-year-old dancer in East Oakland trying to move on with his life after the murder of his little brother. I spent a year embedded in his life, and got a front row seat to an American epidemic.
Something is clearly wrong with our state when all the death sentences are coming out of one county. We are in a crisis when our state, which is 4.3 percent African-American, has a death row that is 100 percent African American. A broken system has produced flawed results.
I ask you, fans across America and around the world, to root for Memphis -- both the Grizzlies team and the city. Maybe a Grizzlies championship can provide just the "grits" this Southern city needs.
there's the almost ritual expectation by the public that second term presidents will be dogged by some scandal. This was the case with Eisenhower, Nixon, of course, Reagan, Clinton and George W. Bush. This shouldn't surprise.
The loneliness of that realization, that my daughter might have to shoulder the consequences of these stigmas, made me heartsick. I'd made myself believe she would only be challenged by her race and gender, not the basic ability to speak her mind.
On this 50th anniversary of the Birmingham Children's Crusade it is a time to remember, honor, and follow the example of the children who were frontline soldiers and transforming catalysts in America's greatest moral movement of the 20th century.
There is no way to make up for decades of discrimination that crippled the proud history of black farm ownership in this country. But we can do our best to move forward.
The first step to overcoming an addiction is admitting that you have one. In order to rid oneself of addiction, one must declare it. My name is Fire Burgess and I am a diehard fan of misogynistic Rap music.
How do we expect our communities and economies to thrive when our young boys and girls are not receiving the education and training that is needed to enter the workforce?
The bill -- passed by the Florida legislature and now awaiting the signature of Governor Rick Scott -- would expedite the death penalty process in the Sunshine state.
We watch the stories of hoarders on television and feel sorry for them and we feel proud to not be one of them. But perhaps we have more in common than we realize.
Anti-choice activists are exploiting the Gosnell trial to push for laws that close abortion clinics and otherwise limit access to choice. But that is exactly the wrong reaction. The horrific conditions at Gosnell's clinic show just how important it is to have real reproductive choice.
In the ongoing "Mommy Wars of 2013", there is still a backlash against mothers who hire individuals (mostly women) to help with childcare. Is this a class issue or just another cafeteria fight?
What happened to the party of Lincoln? To the party that abolished slavery and championed a woman's right to vote? To the party of Reagan who ended the Cold War and revitalized a moribund economy?
The right-wing is screaming at Eric Holder to investigate potential civil rights' violations by IRS officials. He should take them up on their entreaties, and raise the ante by investigating all the voter suppression and intimidation during the 2012 election.
I entered the hospitality industry in 2010. It took me all of one week to realize what I did not want to believe. My housekeeping sisters, mostly Latina, were treated different than me.

From the Grio: Recently, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour said some things that surprised me. And they should surprise you as well. In an interview with Human Events, a conservative website, Barbour discussed growing up in an integrated, tolerant and inclusive South. In his opinion, it was the "old Democrats who had fought for segregation so hard." Speaking of the change in party affiliation from Democrat to Republican in the South, Barbour continued.

Dr Martin Luther King was a Republican and if he were alive today he would still be a Republican.Dr King was not a racemongering Marxist addicted to welfare. He was an American who wanted the best for America. God bless his soul.

They can try to rewrite whatever they like, but when my children ask me certain questions I tell them the truth. I know the truth and there is NOTHING that anybody can do about it. I WILL NOT lie to my children about anything. I always tell them to not just trust what I say, but check what I am saying out. I won't allow my children to be lied to about the past of African Americans in this country, or the treatment they have received while in it.

"I won't allow my children to be lied to about the past of African Americans".
I thinks thats wonderful. I think all black parents should tell their children, that it was the democratic party, that was responsible, for the 3 S's, slavery, segragation and separate but equal.
I think all black parents should tell their children about the infamous black codes, who instituted and maintained them, yep democrates.
I think all parents should know the longest filibuster in congressional history was used to oppose civil rights and it was used by a democrat, with support from his fellow democrats.
Oh yeah, all should know that by percentage more republicans voted for passage of civil rights than democrates.
Tell the children that up until democrates give Black Folk welfare, blacks were hard working, law abiding "Republicans" now look at us Government Junkies"
that is if you want them to know the truth!!!

If anybody should wish to rewrite civil rights history it should by lying azz democrates.
Anybody who has studied the civil rights period, knows for a FACT, that is was democrates who opposed legislation, and JFK was forced to act.
That MLK had to step over the democratic party, becuse they were prepared to do "NOTHING" and becuase republicans had several a civil rights bills ready to go. JFK said time and time again "Now is not the time".
Black folks loyalty to the democrats, doesnt change history, rather it brings into question how anyone can be loyal to those whom are responbile for oppressing their ancestors. It just makes that loyalty all the more puzzling.

Yes, they want to rewrite history because they are not smellin too good nowadays. I never understood black america's loyalty to the democratic party. The democrats have not been good to black people in this country. The above stated facts should have been brought out before the 2008 elections. obama would not have won. also, the democrats, under bill clinton, are responsible for the trade agreements that sent jobs out of america. they are responsible, again under clinton, for throwing out Glass-Steigal that allowed wall street to destroy the economy, our jobs and our homes. I understand that the CBC and jesse jackson also pushed for the desolving of glass-steigal. The jews are mostly democrats. the republicans were not for the bailouts. the democrats wanted to keep us slaves. What happened? How did everything get so twisted? Why did we abandon the republican party in favor of those dirty democrats. Maybe the dixicrats who left the democratic party when black americans were given civil rights, corrupted the republican party. Maybe that is what happened.

Conservatives are not the same as modern Republicans and progressives are not the same as modern Democrats. When speaking on ideological terms it is actually the conservatives (whom were not Republicans during the Civil Rights era) that kept blacks in oppression for years.
This is where things get slightly complicated but don't be confused: conservatives want you all to believe that they did something important in history but all they've ever done is block progress. Progressives (not modern Democrats) are the ones who fought for equality for all Americans: white, black, hispanic, Christian, atheist, agnostic you name it. We fought for your equality.
What really happened was this. Conservatives left the Democratic party of the Civil Rights era because the party wanted to fight for equality. So those racists formed the Dixiecrats. Then the Dixiecrats (Southern Democrats) became Republicans. Then the theocratic Christians also became Republicans.
Then there was Fox News. Behold! A dumbed down America that will believe any lie that conservative demagogues tell them. Liberal democrats no longer exist, the country is in ruins, and the right-wingers have taken everyone but the rich hostage. Congratulations, you opportunists. If there's one thing you've succeeded at its deception.
