Is Interracial Romance Still Scandalous?

Charles and Marion Kierscht Professor, University of Iowa College of Law

As the hit series Scandal continues to show us, despite the increasing rate of interracial marriage within the United States, interracial relationships are still frequently represented as dirty little secrets -- relationships to be hidden rather than shown with pride.

Rapper Fat Joe Detained by Police in Alleged Sexual Assault

Comments (4)

The rapper Fat Joe was detained by police Sunday night after he and his entourage were accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Madison, Wis. According to TMZ, the woman is 33 years old and claims the assault occurred in a Cadillac limousine after a concert at the Orpheum Theater.

Fat Joe (aka Joseph Antonio Cartagena) and his entourage were held for questioning, but he was released and not arrested. The details of the case are still being sorted out in the investigation. Relative to most artists, Fat Joe doesn't get into very much trouble. The 39-year-old married father of two has not, to my knowledge, been accused of any sexual assault, so I'd be surprised if he waited this long to get started. He has been arrested in some of the typical rapper nonsense in the past: In 1998, he and deceased rapper Big Pun were arrested for assaulting a man with a baseball bat and stealing his gold chain. I'm not even going to try to explain that one.

I would never want to be a rapper and live the lifestyle that some artists are expected to. It's chaotic, violent and you are constantly being pushed into one battle or beef after another. I appeared with the rapper Method Man on ESPN once, and our conversation turned to the late Tupac Shakur. One of Method Man's explanations for Shakur's consistent controversy is that when you're out there on top "people are always coming at you."

There is the added confusion of meeting far too many women than a man should have access to at one time. While many of these men believe that they are the dominant entities in these fly-by-night relationships, they are sometimes the victims. I was exposed, during the recent rape trial of former NFL superstar Lawrence Taylor, to information about prostitutes who use date rape drugs, fake IDs and other tricks to extort athletes and entertainers. While there is little evidence to imply that this happened to either Fat Joe or Lawrence Taylor, almost anything is possible in the crazy world of hip-hop and sports.

There is finally the confusion that comes with the massive entourage that most artists keep when they travel. I've never understood that one. I see an entourage as an expensive, risky and time-consuming way to make your life more confusing than it needs to be. If I were a rapper, I'd have three bodyguards, the woman I love, my children, their tutor and a good nanny. Then I'd go out and make records. Life doesn't have to be complicated.
