President and CEO, National Urban League

Comments (1)

Singer and actress Sheryl Lee Ralph is an outspoken HIV/AIDS activist.

Ralph created The Diva Foundation, a non-profit organization as a memory to the friends she lost to HIV/AIDS. The foundation uses music and entertainment as a way to educate and inform regarding HIV/AIDS. Ralph will be at the 2010 Essence Music Festival in New Orleans as a speaker.

As part of The Diva Foundation, Ralph puts on a yearly event featuring song and entertainment called Divas Simply Singing! Ralph is also the founding creator of The Jamaican Film & Musical Festival. After becoming the youngest female to ever graduate from Rutgers University at the age of 19, Ralph got her break on Broadway in 1982 after she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Deena Jones in 'Dreamgirls'.Two years later, Ralph released her only album, 'In The Evening,' which reached #6 on the Billboard Charts in 1984. Ralph might be best known for her role as Deidra "Dee" Mitchell on the hit UPN sitcom 'Moesha.'

Ralph will be speaking twice during the Essence Empowerment Seminar Series:

On Friday, July 2nd at the Steve Harvey's Love & Relationships Super Fest with Marvelyn Brown, Phill Wilson, William Brawner and Dr. Corey Hebert on the topic, "Informed and In Charge: Sex in the Era of HIV."

On Saturday, July 3rd, Ralph will be at the African American Education Summit alongside Hill Harper, Dr. Denese Shervington, Marvelyn Brown, Dr. Ingrid Tucker and Paula Parker-Sawyers on the topic, "The Secret Life Of Our Teens."

These events are free and open to the public.
