From The Grio: Kelly Motzko didn't set out to court controversy when she entered a Target to find a gift for a 4-year-old girl. Naturally she found herself in the toy aisle, but she was not at all pleased by what she encountered. Among the many Barbies of various races in that toy aisle, there was a black Barbie that stood out for all the wrong reasons. Her dress was cut down the front to accentuate her noticeable cleavage. According to Motzko, a St. Paul, Minn.-based behavioral specialist, there were Barbies of other ethnicities on the aisle but the African American Barbie was the only one that appeared highly sexualized.See what she did and a full video @ The Grio

There are over 15 Barbies in this collection featuring barbies of different hues in LBDs - little black dresses. I would not purchase this barbie as a toy for my 8 year old daughter. I do plan to purchase 2 of them for my collection. The barbie in the story is not the only barbie. In fact there is one who is blue/black :) with a short afro and she is beautiful.

Seeing this new Barbie is so very disappointing but not necessarily surprising. Although it supposedly wasn't designed for children, its placement in the doll/toy department is disingenuous. And that Mattel made her African-American...Is it possible that no one at Mattel found the product offensive, racist, denigrating or did no one care?
It's important for all children to have dolls that look like them, especially those of African descent, as racial perceptions form early. It's also critical for children's products to promote self-esteem, not disparage it. To that end EthiDolls.com has created a line of authentic, storied dolls celebrating inspirational, historical female leaders from Africa. With their accompanying illustrated storybooks and audio books, these dolls send positive messages to all young girls. And the message: "You can be strong, courageous, accomplished". That's a message well worth sending
