The Origins of Black History Month
Carter G. Woodson was a coal miner and child of former slaves with enthusiasm for the historical documentation of the African-American experience. He decided as a young man that our stories needed to be recognized. After earning a Ph.D. from Harvard University in history, Carter became a Howard University professor. He then co-founded and financed the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915, with the lofty goal of having it both publish and fund research and writing projects about black history. After resigning as a professor, Woodson dedicated all of his time to the association, as well as to publishing books and resources about the black experience. One notable quarterly he edited was The Journal of Negro History, which was distributed worldwide.

In 1976, it evolved into Black History Month.

Why is it we embrace those of moral degradation, and cheer bad manners. Why us black on black crime
more prevalent and less advertised? Our Presdent has had a hard row to hoe, because like the slaves of old we want the massah to give us a hand out. We were ot the ones tll the soil, perhaps if we had we would have been more appreciative of the educational opportunities of today.
My great great great great grandmother was African American married to a white man, they split over the slavery issue, she was pro and ran a rent a slave business in NC, he was white and against it.
How many of us want to return to Africa to stay?
I am strong because my ancestors were survivors, strength of heart and mind, joy in being me. I would rather praise 20 Oprahs than one Tupac.
