The chancellor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) quickly condemned an off-campus party held by fraternity members that makes fun of black history month. The party was themed as a "Compton Cookout," where attendees were encouraged to wear T-shirts, rapper-style clothing and gold chains. The women were encouraged to attend the party as "ghetto chicks," described as having gold teeth, cheap clothes and "short, nappy hair."
"We reject acts of discrimination ... and we will confront and appropriately respond to such acts," Chancellor Marye Anne Fox said.
The invitation on Facebook also stated that the party would serve watermelon, chicken, malt liquor, cheap beer and a purple sugar-water concoction called "dat Purple Drank." The UC San Diego campus doesn't contain a very strong African American presence, with black students comprising less than 2 percent of the undergraduate class.
"These are the people I go to school with, and knowing that they're mocking my culture and the history of black people is really offensive," sophomore Elize Diop said.
The party was organized by members of several fraternities. It is unlikely that the students will be disciplined, since the party was off campus and not sanctioned by the university. Pi Kappa Alpha was the only fraternity identified in an e-mail from Gary Ratliff, the assitant vice chancellor for student life.
Okay, I've been teaching on college campuses for a while, so let me take a stab at how we might put this in perspective. There's no point in wanting to slap someone silly without at least trying to make it into a teachable moment. The students have obviously done something incredibly embarrassing to themselves, their families and their university, but there might be a few things to learn from all this:
1) UCSD's lack of commitment to diversity is reflected in this incident: When the institution itself is not committed to diversity (with only 2 percent of the student body being African American), are you really surprised when the 19- and- 20-year-olds you're teaching do something that is culturally ignorant? Before condemning the students, UCSD leadership needs to consider condemning itself for creating the kind of environment that allows this kind of thing to happen. It's very easy to shake a stick at those who offend our racial sensitivities, but it is much more difficult to make meaningful changes to our social and institutional infrastructure that lead to a more inclusive environment.
2) Are students being educated beyond chicken and watermelon? I'd love to get a sense of the standard curriculum for UCSD students. I am willing to bet that students are not required to take any courses on African-American history and are not even given the tools to overcome the disease of racism in America. Therefore, most of their racial education comes from BET and hip-hop videos; hence, you have "ghetto parties" for black history month, since their definition of blackness consists of rappers, watermelon and gold teeth.
3) The UCSD problem is not isolated: Racist incidents, such as the one on the UC San Diego campus, occur all over the nation. It is not because students are deliberately trying to be racist or terrible people. It usually happens because our nation has not committed itself to having productive conversations on race (I've laid this point out several times on MSNBC - perhaps one day President Barack Obama will confront racial issues). Therefore, the racial ignorance factor in America remains quite high. It's time to start teaching our students to see the world differently. Perhaps UCSD will take this incident as an opportunity to reconsider its curriculum and how it addresses race on its campus. The campus can start by creating a more diverse student body and requiring its students to obtain a more adequate cross-cultural education. It is only by being courageous that we can seriously confront the race problem in America.

You know what? We have tougher skin than that. We make a mockery of them sometimes and they ( caucasians ) swallow it. Just as long as there is no physical harm..."Wipe it off your shoulder". Keep becoming more knowledgable about life, keep helping our young black people become more educated and successfull. Mentally put all the bad people you encounter in a corner and keep an eye on them.

Why does this stuff even make the news still, who cares did they hurt anyone, no, did they offend people, probablly, but who doesnt make fun or poke at another race, really. White people make fun of black people, black people make fun of white people, everyone makes fun of chinese people, chinese people make fun of everyone. Get over it already, what ever happened to freedom of speech and expression, how are those even possible when we have to be politically correct about everything. FINAL WORDS: GET OVER IT, LIFE GOES ON, NO ONE WAS HURT, DONT ACT LIKE YOU'VE NEVER DONE IT BEFORE. (NOT AIMED AT dre_in_minnesota, aimed at everyone)

I am neither black nor white. I do like your statement. I see black comedians dishing it out against white people constantly, but if a white comedian did this, they would be ridiculed. I'm Native American and I can laugh at an "Indian" joke. No one is being oppressed here. It's time for the minority mentality to be extinguished. We are all children of God.

I'm with The Truth and Superior Joe on this one. I heard on the news that the namby pamby minority politicians in Sacramento want these students punished. The first thing out of my mouth, "There's the death of free speech". Free speech is only ok to Liberals when it conforms to their ideals and political mindset.

@ "The Truth"- your response was one of the most ignorant I've scene on this topic. You think just because no one was "physically hurt" that that makes this type of behavior acceptable? You're missing THE POINT: African americans are STILL viewed by not only "white america" but by the world at large as watermelon, chicken eating, gold grilled, uneducated "subhumans." I'm so sick of all you Uncle Tom "People of Color" who keep singing that tired @ss Rodney King song: "Can't we all just get along?" I got a better idea for you. Why don't you go to the library and study some black history. LEARN YOUR FAMILY HISTORY. LEARN WHERE YOU CAME FROM. LEARN THE HISTORY OF YOUR OPPRESSOR. AND GET SERIOUS ABOUT FINDING THE GOD YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY STILL LOOKING FOR Until you do that you are nothing more than a shell of your former selves...

As I've said before, racism MUST be viewed in a historical context. There is no history of systemic racism by blacks against whites in this country. The perceived issue of blacks mocking white culture is not morally equivalent to the reverse. Had all things been equal without the history of one race subjugating, exploiting and otherwise dehumanizing the other, only then would there be valid argument of tit for tat. These historical facts are inescapable!

you are wrong, those kids are saying that the behavior that they were pertreying is how all african american are. They feel as though they can get away with it because here are very few black people at this school

Are you serious? And you know this how? Where is it saying that they were "pertraying" (sic) ALL black people this way? It seems as if they were "pertraying" the ghetto subculture as buffoons, which they are. And it's doubtful it is because "here" (sic) are very few black people there.
Get an education, learn how to spell and use proper grammar, and somewhere in there you may learn about the dangers of extrapolation. And, no, that is not a term for something in a porno movie!!!!
