There is no doubt that the opportunity to re-elect America's first black president contributed to record black turnout last year. But, no matter who is on the ballot in 2014 and 2016, we must continue to exercise our voice. We must continue to exercise our vote.
Biblical passages to which conservative Christians appeal on these issues can be interpreted differently. But even those convinced that conservatives do not interpret the Bible correctly in these cases must concede that they do so consistently.
I am proud to be part of organizations like the Connecticut Sun and the WNBA that put such emphasis on giving back to the communities and people that support them.
Unlike many rappers in hip-hop who are obvious industry pinheads just trying to cash into the bank, Kanye West knows more. Yet, that is perhaps the very problem: he knows more and yet does nothing to actually fix the problem.
I get that "Revolution" isn't trying to be groundbreaking drama, but it's been most compelling when it was unpredictable. This is an interesting premise that's been established. Keep us on our toes, and we'll be more invested.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) just released the latest data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) on Americans' sugar consumption, and the results are quite surprising. Here are some of the findings that really grabbed my attention.
Growing up in Tulsa, my dream was to play in the NBA. I am fortunate to have been able to achieve my dream, and now helping other kids follow their dreams has proven to be just as impactful on my life as every minute that I played in the NBA.
President Obama impeccably and eloquently made the connection between the role Morehouse has played in shaping today's world and the role it will play in shaping the future.
Weather it's a luxurious excursion or a quick trip, shopping is one of life's great pleasures. Shop like a pro with these tips and your next run to Barney's will be nothing short of a success!
Truth be told, slurs are common around the water cooler, reflecting a dehumanizing view of criminal defendants that comes from years of locking them up, one person of color at a time.
After my sister died from breast cancer three years ago, I asked, during my mammogram, whether I should get tested for the breast cancer gene. I was warned that doing so, particularly if I tested positive for the gene, could mark me as an individual with a so-called pre-existing condition.
I'm honored Andrea Morehead could share some advice for other busy moms and her thoughts on early education.
Barack Obama visited Morehouse College on Sunday to give a refrain on the responsibility of Morehouse Men and black America to find dignity and progress in self-reliance, a refrain that has simultaneously proven exciting and excruciating for African Americans over the last four years.
I'd believed that I was headed for greatness, but they had revealed in me a thing that was seemingly so dirty, so disgusting that my other talents paled in comparison to the supposed vileness of being a practicing homosexual. And for this they bullied me right out of the church.
I was a 25-year-old documentary filmmaker from New York working on a show for MTV. He was a 21-year-old dancer in East Oakland trying to move on with his life after the murder of his little brother. I spent a year embedded in his life, and got a front row seat to an American epidemic.
Something is clearly wrong with our state when all the death sentences are coming out of one county. We are in a crisis when our state, which is 4.3 percent African-American, has a death row that is 100 percent African American. A broken system has produced flawed results.
I ask you, fans across America and around the world, to root for Memphis -- both the Grizzlies team and the city. Maybe a Grizzlies championship can provide just the "grits" this Southern city needs.
there's the almost ritual expectation by the public that second term presidents will be dogged by some scandal. This was the case with Eisenhower, Nixon, of course, Reagan, Clinton and George W. Bush. This shouldn't surprise.
The loneliness of that realization, that my daughter might have to shoulder the consequences of these stigmas, made me heartsick. I'd made myself believe she would only be challenged by her race and gender, not the basic ability to speak her mind.

This is an excellent presentation about Kwanzaa. If we, as a people, would only practice these seven principles, we would become a better race of people. Our racial pride is deteriorating fast for lack of knowledge about our own culture and history. It seems like so many of our people are busy trying to be somebody else, something other than who and what they ARE, that our Black men and women have just, snarlingly "TURNED" on each other.
This is sad. We are, slowly, becoming a dying breed. We need the principles of Kwanzaa, NOW, more than ever!! Thank you, Vanessa K. Bush, for this fine article.

The people who embrace Kwanzaa are generally not the ones who need to embrace it's principles. Maybe Dr. Karenga could help by getting out of the classroom, rolling up his sleeves, and visiting the streets of South Central. See if he can get all the baby daddies to take care of their kids, and the baby mommas to learn some job skills. Maybe he can get the Rolling 60's to put down their guns and stop terrorizing the neighborhood. Maybe he can suggest how we can get some of our young men out of jail (he knows a little something about jail.) Maybe he can develop a program that really empowers the powerless. These rituals are very sweet, but they do not change the lives of our people in a constructive way. Faith in God is what we need to teach. When people find Jesus, their lives change in measurable ways. This is just a bunch of rituals to take our minds off of what is really important. You can keep Kwanzaa!

While I understand what you are saying. It is very judgmental and self-righteous. It is us to each of us to roll up our sleeves. Why look to someone else to do what you can do? Dr. Karenga has done his part, look at the person in the mirror. Everyone who celebrates Kwanzaa needs it, don't be naive or mislead. If more black people had their lives together that alone would rectify the problems you mentioned but we are not together as a people and that is why our schools, churches, families, and communities suffer so.
Just something to think about before shooting off. Look in the mirror. Personally, I do a lot and that is still not enough. So I don't pat myself on the back I just dig in even deeper and keep working. None of us can talk until we see daylight.

I have been hearing about KWANZAA for many years, but never knew the full meaning of it. Iam a Christian. The whole idea of KWANZAA is great, because it teaches BLACKS to be responsible in all aspects of life. This is good for a person no matter what they believe in. Every one can benefit from KWANZAA the world would be a better place.

I have been celebrating and exposing my 2 sons to the Kwanzaa tradition for 5 years now. Although it was a "blah blah" fest for them, I continued to expose them to the 7 life altering Principles and I've also made sure I've exposed them to the blessed rewards of following the Principles. This is such a wonderful way to promote dialog, thought provoking ideas that turn into well thought out plans for the following year. Raising 2 boys alone I want to make sure they are not "statistics" and guide them into being successes like their mom. The Principles build character, raises awareness and keeps one focused on bettering the family and the self. I think EVERY race should look into this; maybe eyes will be opened to destructive behavior patterns. I plan on continuing this tradition and I hope it brings my boy's family to my home each year for the celebration so it may be instilled into their children as well.
