Situated perfectly in between New York and Boston/Providence, Mohegan Sun is a perfect destination for those who can't get to Vegas -- it's a staycation that works with many budgets.

First opened in 1996, Mohegan Sun is run by the Mohegan Tribe, who are native to the area. The tribe has invested over one billion dollars into its hotel and casino. Basically, it's mall meets casino meets hotel meets spa meets concert venue meets club -- all rolled in one. My husband and I came up for a weekend to catch a Jay Z show at the 10,000 seat Arena which attracts world class talent -- and enjoyed ourselves at every turn.

For the gamblers, there are actually three casinos at Mohegan -- each representing an element with Native American designs to represent each -- Casino of the Earth, Casino of the Sky and the newest, Casino of the Wind. Some of them are smoke free, and all of the casinos are designed to represent its "element" with beautifully appointed native decor.

For those who don't like gaming as much, you can get a massage at the Elemis spa, take a dip in the pool, shop at over 60 stores (that stay open late!) or eat at any number of restaurants. I must say that the food at Mohegan is a big draw -- there are over 30 restaurants and they've got something for every palate -- from high end like Michael Jordan's steakhouse and the scrumptious seafood brunch at Pompeii and Caesar to my hubby's favorite buffets or Chief's deli -- that serves up a mean Ruben.

As for the nightlife, there's a concert venue, and three hot clubs that stay open to the wee hours (and childcare if you need it.) During the summer, Mohegan Sun has a farmer's market three days a week and fireworks displays. And they're always offering special rates, so check them out soon!
