Comments really heated up after I wrote the blog about Terry McMillan's ex-husband's new book entitled BALANCING ACT. It's dumb obvious that Jonathan Plummer is exploiting the ongoing drama between he and Terry to make some dough. Even Terry herself stopped by to add her two cents on her ex-husband's book and the state of black book publishing. Here's a snippet of her comments:
I thank many of your for your generous spirit, your kindness, intelligence but mostly for your support for not supporting this exploitative, reacist, sexist book. Simon & Schuster is as much to blame for insulting me and hoping to cash in by capitalizing on my good name for their own corporate gain. They have been waiting for me to speak out publicly against this book ever since they made false promises in their Summer 2007 boasting about how much of my behind the scenes scandalous divorce would be in this book, and then when I lashed out at them, they tried to recant, but too late for that.
Well Terry's definitely taking a stand, not just against Plummer's book, but against sectors of the publishing industry. Troy Johnson of AALBC.com recently posted an email that Terry McMillan wrote to Karen Hunter, Louise Burke, and Carolyn Reidy. Hunter is the coauthor of BALANCING ACT, Burke is the publisher of Pocket Books and Reidy is the president of Simon & Schuster, the house that published Plummer's book.
In the email letter, Terry lashes out at the proliferation of what she feels are degrading and trashy books (she mentions urban/ghetto lit)--including Plummer's. She was HOT!
You can read the entire email exchange here. Thanks to Troy for pointing me to the link.
What do you think of Terry's letter? And what do you think about the state of black book publishing in general?

I think it's so important that those of us in books and the media share Terry's powerful words. Terry presented me with my first literary award, a 1995 Frederick Douglass Creative Arts Center Fellowship, at the annual FDCAC Black Roots Festival. She had made a financial contribution to support the center, an important cultural institution in NYC that promotes craft by providing a space in our community where writers can workshop their material. Few know of those kinds of contributions. Terry was also down with the Harlem Writers Guild back in the day. I think it's incredibly interesting that she contextualizes her experiences in the debate raging over Urban Literature, and I wrote a bit about that aspect of her letter on my blog.

Terry it is about freedom of speech. What is so wrong with an exhusband writing a book after his marriage to a celebrity Black author. Ms. McMillan has the audacity to assail Mr. Plummer but what I know of some of her famous works they are sexist and degrade "äll," mind you "all" Black men. Get off your pompous high horse and have a great day... at the bank of course. Stop the nonesense Ms.Millan you're using the same tactics and public forum bilions of writers use to sell their merchandise to us the bying public. It seems you want to use your celebrity status to taunt and to imtimidate from up there on your celestial podium you should starkly be ashamed of yourself. thanks for listening. Signed a proud Black American, Harry

Plummer needs his a$$ whooped. She deserved better than that. I hope I'm not the only man that thought "Wiating to Exhale" was a great movie/book. I didn't find it sexist or male-bashing. It was a great book that detailed the lives of a group of black women's struggles in their relationships with black men. I think some of us have forotten that their were decent men in the film as well Wesley Snipes & Gregory Hines).

C'mon y'all. We live in a CAPITALIST SOCIETY. It's all about the benjamins. "money money money... for the love of money people don't care who they hurt or beat" It's really kinda sad. ALL ANYone wants to be is, PAID. It's almost as if the almighty dollar adds some kind of ligitimacy to the most heinous of actions. sigh...

I believe Terry is now a bitter scorned woman. Terry I pray you find happiness, you have a great deal to be thankful for. Forget about Jonathan and do you!

She is so right and it's not just our books, but our music and movies...Why is it that we can't seem to rise ABOVE the gutter, in consciousness. The same old lower level thinking based on living by the five senses only. When will we raise ourselves in consciousness and produce better EVERYTHING!

I agree the publishers are to blame, but so are we. We all contribute to a society where a book like If I Did It is #2 on the New York Times bestseller’s list. Books like The Vixen Diaries are selling as a top must read book! The readers of today like to read gossip and watch Reality shows! So they are inquisitive therefore that is why those books are rated so high....Morals are below par. Glad to hear Terry McMillan’s view but felt that the letter should not have been sent. I know she apologizes for lashing out, but as much as I like her a lot but, I know everyone does not like her but they respect her and do not bash her.
