The loneliness of that realization, that my daughter might have to shoulder the consequences of these stigmas, made me heartsick. I'd made myself believe she would only be challenged by her race and gender, not the basic ability to speak her mind.
On this 50th anniversary of the Birmingham Children's Crusade it is a time to remember, honor, and follow the example of the children who were frontline soldiers and transforming catalysts in America's greatest moral movement of the 20th century.
There is no way to make up for decades of discrimination that crippled the proud history of black farm ownership in this country. But we can do our best to move forward.

The bill -- passed by the Florida legislature and now awaiting the signature of Governor Rick Scott -- would expedite the death penalty process in the Sunshine state.
We watch the stories of hoarders on television and feel sorry for them and we feel proud to not be one of them. But perhaps we have more in common than we realize.
Anti-choice activists are exploiting the Gosnell trial to push for laws that close abortion clinics and otherwise limit access to choice. But that is exactly the wrong reaction. The horrific conditions at Gosnell's clinic show just how important it is to have real reproductive choice.
In the ongoing "Mommy Wars of 2013", there is still a backlash against mothers who hire individuals (mostly women) to help with childcare. Is this a class issue or just another cafeteria fight?

The right-wing is screaming at Eric Holder to investigate potential civil rights' violations by IRS officials. He should take them up on their entreaties, and raise the ante by investigating all the voter suppression and intimidation during the 2012 election.

We know children are influenced by everything from family income and dynamics to what happens in the classroom. Helping students uncover their strengths, rather than their weaknesses, and develop their potential should be the paramount focus for education.

Incidents of rape always need to be called out, as Joyner did, and addressed immediately, but it shouldn't be brought to attention while denigrating a member of another minority group within the same population, as Joyner also did.

When you specifically name someone, then it's personal.
I must admit I don't watch CBS evening news, I still think Katie Couric is a valid newscaster.
Ms. Smith on the other hand has yet to do a guest-host spot on 'Entertainment Tonight'.
I'm sure if she had the chance, she wouldn't have targeted KC.

I am glad that Miss USA can see for her self that KC is nothing but a joke on CBS. She is young and got the right to voice how she feels. CBS are trying to get rid of her and I can't blame them. They paid all that money and only got another lemon!

So what did she say that's so outrageous?
The network of Edward R. Murrow and Charles Collingwood, the network that once took on Joe McCarthy at his peak, caved to right-wing pressure and fired Dan Rather for daring to blow the whistle on our chickenhawk President's war record and replaced him with with a lightweight cheesecake anchorwoman that can't win the public's respect. Couric has become a joke that's dragged the CBS Evening News' ratings to record lows. Rather has talked about the Evening News being "dumbed down and tarted up." Rachel Smith is just starting her career, and she doesn't want it to end that way; who would?
For the record, before she was Miss USA, she earned a journalism degree magna cum laude from a prestigious college and served an internship in the news department of a local TV station, so she's entitled to her opinion on the subject. She's already achieved far more than most young women her age (22), so based on her record there's a good chance when she's Couric's age she'll be taken more seriously than Couric is now.

Robert, even if she feels this way, there is a thing called decorum. I wouldn't hire her regardless of her credentials because she doesn't know when to keep her mouth shut.

Looks like Robert is the president of the Rachel Smith fan club. So, let's get this straight, she graduated top of her class at a major university, and she couldn't think of anything smart to say? I guess being 'book smart' isn't everything when it comes to common sense.
She may have ended her career before it started, but that's ok, she's just one swim suit away from another beauty pageant, and if all else fails....she can always
'dumb down' and become a contestant on 'The Bachelor'.
LOL

Ms. Smith should be made aware that women who start out as models and beauty pageant contestants rarely earn the respect of mainstream America. She's shown little tact and finesse with her statement.

What did she say that is so wrong? Couric is vapid and lightweight, everyone knows it. CBS isn't in last place because Couric is an electrifying and riveting newscaster, they're in last place because no one takes her seriously. She the Pop Tart of broadcast news, only without the Pop and without the Tart. Dan Rather was no better, as you watched out of sheer fascination to see if his dentures were going to fall out. Bottom line, none of this really matters.
