Hello, Diane. Here's my question (hopefully it makes the cut :-D)
I have relaxed hair that falls just below my shoulders. I want to get the curly look (perhaps as a way to eventually transition back to natural), but don't want to damage my hair or lose the length. Are two-strand twists a good option? Is there a way to do that so that the curly look lasts a week (between shampoos) without flopping or without my having to use products that will make my hair stiff?
Thank you for your help.

Hi Diane,
My hair has been natural for eight years, about shoulder length, very curly and it's thick and spongy. Since going natural, it seems my time is consumed with finding products that suit my hair and then the style options available to me. You make some good suggestions in your book but some items are not available in my area. I'm finding that natural hair is much more manual than relaxed. As a result, mine ends up in an Afro-puff for everyday wear. What's a quick option for work, short of locks or twists?

Dear Ms. DaCosta,
Thank you so much for lending your expertise to all of us. I am a Black dermatologist at Henry Ford Hosp. in Detroit, Mi. I am seeing and treating Black women with hair loss in epdemic proportions. We don't have all the answers we need but I am committed to helping my patients. As a Black woman, who gave up chemical relaxers 11 yrs ago, I know how difficult it is for many women to accept natural hair options. I am planning a seminar to shae with local hair stylists what I am doing to treat and educate my patients. As an expert in hair care, I would like to talk with you about participating in such an endeavor. I do have grant money to help with this project. I can be reached at Djackso1@hfhs.org or at 248-661-6464. I look forward to learning from you at this blog. Thanks again, Diane

Hi Diane, I have fine curly hair that has not been relaxed for at least 5 years. Its looks like a jerry curl when it is wet and a frizzy bag of cotton candy when it drys naturally. When I blow dry my hair it is too thin and had no weight or body. It is just thin fly away hair. I wear hair extensions most of the time because of this problem but I am tired of wearing hair extensions. Do you know of anything I can do to make my hair thicker so that I can wear my own hair? I would appreciate any recommendations that you might have. Thanks and have a blessed day.

Diane, I am raising my 9 yr. old grandaughter that has very fine and thin hair. I don't know what to do with it without breaking it all out. Perms it breaks, cornroll braiding it breaks, rubber bands it breaks. I am out of ideas. And not to mention the friz, it really looks horrible and drives me up the wall. Do you have any suggestions? I am at my wits with this dilema.

Hi Diane
I am a black male and I have soft hair and a little problem with dandruff and my hair is about one to two inches long dry and brittle. I want to have the kinky nappy afro look, similar to yours but from a man prospective. How do I go about getting my hair trained and what products should I use and how to take care of it. There is a lot of information for braids, locs, twist, balds but nothing for men who wants to grow an kinky nappy afro look. Is it true the hair has to be twisted and then untwisted? please help a brother out.

Hello Diane,
I am concerned that the distribution of beauty and hair supply storesin the Black Community is owned primarily by Asians. There is a MONOpoly on this industry that I want to see changed. Madame C.J. Walker would be so ashameed of us for not continuing a legacy which she started. I want to see this Monolpoly broken by some political action plan from the Hair industry. I am so tired of our community getting "played and Pimped" by the Asian community. We must display our economic muscle in this industry and break this monopoly.
