The hair blog has been up for two weeks now and I'm delighted to see the flood of positive responses in the
Comments section. I knew I wasn't the only person on BV who had a passion for hair care – and a dire need to better maintain my tresses.
While working through the comments I decided to take this time to address something that continues to pop up often in our community.I see the same trend here online.
Let's talk about the term "good hair."
You've either grown up hearing it all your life from relatives, friends and beauticians because you have "it", or you've heard the opposite such as, "Your hair won't do that because you don't have 'good hair.'" I am in the latter category. I can recall being seven years-old and spending the night over my cousin's house. The next day my aunt was helping me get ready for church and while brushing my hair, said disgustedly, "You have such nappy hair, child."
That stuck with me obviously as I am now an adult and it feels like it was just yesterday. When in college, I decided to grow my then shoulder-length hair down my back and was met with remarks such as, "If you don't have good hair it won't grow that long." Well, I proved them wrong and now have so much hair that the Dominican salons charge me extra.
Who got the last laugh?
I am taking you down memory lane but I am leading to this: We need to bury the term 'good hair.'
I cannot recall when this term has ever done anything more than create a divide among us – and that includes both men and women.
To state someone has "good hair" means that others don't and if we don't see the beauty in our skin, our hair and our various complexions perhaps it's time to look in the mirror and decide if we like ourselves.

When people use the term good hair, you see just how ignorant they are.

Please, please, please..
Let's bury the term 'good hair.' I tutored in a middle school last year and the African-American girls often included 'good hair' in their descriptions of people. Kids of other races in our group, would get a puzzled look on their face, because they didn't really understand what the girl were talking about. This proved to me the 'hair issue' is mostly an internalized view of ourselves and one we need to to stop promulgating. There is thick hair, thin hair, different hues and colors of hair, long and short hair, wavy and straight hair and even nappy hair like mine and its all GOOD! We need to embrace what we have and work with it, and we will begin to love it and ourselves. I'll be happy when we say more often, "Girl, your hair looks good," instead of "..you got some good hair..."

I MUST ADMIT, WE DO HAVE TO GET RID OF THAT PHRASE. THAT'S PRETTY MUCH THE FIRST THING PEOPLE SAY WHEN THEY SEE PEOPLE WITH NICE HAIR.THEY EQUATE HAIR WITH BEAUTY.

I am in favor of burying the term and the whole issuse, it has been a pain all my life. I cut my hair off
for years, going to my uncle's barber shop before it became a fashion. My proudest moment was when I heard India Aries' song "I am not my hair", which has been true all my life. Nappy hair long or short is one of the features that make us unique.

I remember hearing the term "good hair" used around me by relatives growing up and didn't really know what it meant, I guess mainly because I grew up housed on military bases without a lot of black folk and both my mother and father had soft, fine hair. Basically all I knew was that I couldn't wear my hair like other little black girls did and it just widened the gulf between us all. So yeah, I'm down for kicking the term to the curb.

Some black people don't know the difference between "good hair" or any hair .... Do you know how many times I've been to a beauty salon and had my hair over processed and ended up bald headed?????
So at this point I'm just tryin' to have hair .... good, bad or Indifferent. Just some dag-gon' Hair.

Absolutely agree with the writer of this article. I have been blessed to have the mentality of There is no such thing as "Good HaiR" all of my life!
I attribute this intelligence to my spiriual upbringing.

Ladies! Here is the definitation of "good hair," it is called healthy, clean, and whatever God Blessed you to have on your God Given Body!! We need to remember that, first and foremost. When we grasp that definition for what we 'ourself' without DISCRIMINATION from our ancesteral 'curse' STILL carry, we will always be holding on to the shackles of SHAME. Especially living in this white supremist matriarchy, where the definition of "good" is based off of European's definition of "white."
Wake up all of you beautiful African Queen's and BE what God has you to be. BEAUTIFUL!

So many black women have been scarred by that term. Why do you think so many sisters buy the weaves? So they can look like the white girls because they're brainwashed into thinking that nappy, kinky, curly hair is ugly. We have not come as far as we profess. It saddens my heart when I see black women flipping their fake hair just like the white girls, and I bet white people crack up at these wannabees. Wake up sisters!! Be proud of your heritage.
