debate is akin to sleeping with the devil, but I'm more interested in the announcement yesterday that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have both agreed to address the National Urban League's annual conference in St. Louis in July. Why?
Because the conference's theme for this year is one of my favorite topics: "Your Money, Your Future" -- as in how black folks deal with our money directly affects how far we'll progress in
America in the future. That, of course, is a no brainer, but the fact that HIllary and Barack are both addressing the conference I'm hoping means that they'll both be forced to candidly talk about specific policies they would put in place as president to deal with the Urban League's annual report, which talked about the dismal financial state of black males in America. That's a long shot because presidential candidates are always scripted to the letter and because we black males aren't exactly a swing voting block, what with those pesky laws about losing your right to vote after a felony. But here's hoping somebody throws 'em a good question or two about how to get more black men involved in the mainstream American economy that forces them to go off-script.

The article is cool. I am supporting Barack Obama, and would like to know why only Hiliary's picture ran with the article? There should have been a pic of both or none at all.

I am very supportive of Barack Obama. We have put too much faith in the white society. Why not give a man of color the chance to represent us all..I do mean every person of color. People wakeup..........

The Urban League doesn't need to talk to Obama or Hillary to know what's wrong with Black America. The Urban League needs to look in the mirror. Some of our race would ignore race and blame each other for failure instead of finding ways to make it easier for those not as successful chances to make it. It's amazing what a little success can do to a person's mind. We want to forget about race, but unfortunately in the boardroom and the bedroom others won't. Race still matters, but it's easier for some of us to close our eyes and smile. Blacks aren't getting the last laugh.

I do know how both Hillary and Obama can change things it's very simple, but Race really does matter. The fact that being African American/Black what ever you wish to be called in it's self presents a call for a law to be passed is just the beginning. What and who are we are haven't been decided do this first and then mayby we could build some wealth.

I think its gould that candidates are fighting for our vote. Id like to see the day when two or three prominent african americans or any other groups of color for that matter oare fighting for our vote. People may actually have to think and make choices. And thats always good for America.
When people start beleiving that they should bless others as they have been blessed, then our finance issues may be worked out. But the me first attitude dominates.

I would like to say it is important to listen to the speaker and not base any decisions on color. So you are you making your decision on color ALONE you should rethink that philosophy.

The issues are more far-reaching than race. Immigration reform is crucial; the most displaced worker due to the rampant immigration levels (legal & illegal) is the black male. On a larger scale, how many jobs are lost annually (by U.S. CITIZENS) to immigrants? IF this influx of workers were really needed, how could we have the unemployment rate we do?? Supply & demand: When supply exceeds demand, the price (generally) goes down. Due to influx of immigrants there are more workers than than are jobs. Result? Lower wages. We need to start asking candidates what are you going to do for AMERICANS? and for THIS country? (Instead of what are you going to do for the blacks, latinos, etc.) "Divide and conquer." There's too much 'corporate welfare' in this country. Too bad there isn't the furor over that that there was over individual welfare benefits. "Capitalism contains within it the seeds of its own destruction" (Karl Marx). No, I'm not advocating communism, but our extreme capitalist bent seems to be the root of our problems: the 'me first' attitude (mentioned in Alex's post), 'corporate welfare', corporate greed (and it's not necessarily the shareholders that are beneftting as we've seen from all the scandals), not to mention how far away we are from our foundation (the Constituion and Bill of Rights). United we stand, divided we fall; We need to stand together as AMERICANS (not different groups of hyphenated Americans). Is poverty any more easier for one person than the other because of the color of one's skin? Wars - who benefits? The corporations that manufacture equipment & supplies needed for combat & then those who benefit from 'rebuilding' (& that doesn't necessarily mean AMERICAN corporations - now we're into 'global economy.') Remember when China was always referred to as "Red China" (as in COMMUNIST China?) It's still "Communist" China; US/China trade statistics: 2006 $232 -1/2 million DEFICIT (the U.S. imported more than it exported); 1st qtr. 2007: almost $57 million DEFICIT. We allow foreign owership of our land, foreign investments, other countries have financed our national debt (including China) which is almost $9 TRILLION. Some U.S. voters also vote in Mexico. I could go on and on...there are too many serious issues that face this country for us to continue to propagate this hyphenated-American competition. The economy...unemployment...global warming...the environment...voter fraud....the future of this country, and our grandchildren (and their grandchildren) are at stake. Wake up!
