I almost felt obligated to jump on the bandwagon with the hype over 'Dreamgirls.' I have the utmost respect for these legendary women in entertainment, and of course the behind-the-scenes people who paved the way for the rest. But at the end of the day the movie just didn't do it for me.
I don't think the 13-year-olds in the house realized what they were in for either when they spent their hard earned $6.50 on tickets. The "ooohs" and "ahhhs" from the audience quickly turned to grunts and sighs as the film revealed itself as a musical.
It's unfortunate that the dialogue wasn't worked in more tactfully. There was one point where I'm sure there were 10 extremely loooong songs back-to-back.
Don't get me wrong... the acting was superb. Jamie Foxx plays Curtis Taylor Jr., the lowdown sleazy manager and love interest to Deena Jones, played by Ms. Beyoncé Knowles. Eddie Murphy got another chance to shamelessly rock his skin tight pants and half-buttoned shirt as James 'Thunder' Early. And Jennifer Hudson belted out some of the most soulful sounds the music industry has heard since the glory days of Motown, no kidding.
But again, the movie just didn't do it for me.
There is really only one scene that I can remember clear as day, strictly for the irony. Deena Jones is reminding Curtis Taylor Jr. that his forte is music... not movies. It just doesn't get any better than this folks. It's almost as if she was talking to every rapper/singer gone actor, and every actor gone rapper/singer.
Truth be told, this one is for die-hard musical fans, or young bucks who just don't know any better.

I had originally heard that it seemed more like a musical and so I decided to just go see it myself and I ended up actually going back a second time . I loved the movie. yes it has music ,but like other simular movies " the 5 heartbeats , temptations " it also has a story to it . Now dont get me wrong there was one scene where they couldve left the singing out . When effie found out dena was gonna be lead singer , but other than that I acctually enjoyed the singing and plan to get the movie for my home collection . It may acctually be my new favorite movie so that just proves that everybody has there own opinion and I hope that ya'll are old enough to know better than to just take someone elses opinion as gold and see for youre self .

"Truth be told, this one is for die-hard musical fans, or young bucks who just don't know any better."
Why wouldn't "they" KNOW ANY BETTER? Or do they not know how to read like other people, as rumored?
Why would you go to a MUSICAL and then COMPLAIN about it being a MUSICAL?
This movie is such as hit that people are going back to see it again and again.
You forgot to mention that this is a RESPONSE MOVIE. One that gets the whole theater laughing, moving and participating!
This is SOMETHING sorely needed with today's YOUNG and YOUNGER BUCKS!
To see people use their extraordinary TALENT to deliver a line via song, is something the YOUNG and YOUNGER BUCKS should see.
REAL TALENT is EXPRESSED and EMPLOYED by the performers. They use this TALENT to tell a story, to deliver a emotional message, to register angst and anger.
It's a VACATION from and more than the butt-shaking, bitch calling of the USUAL and BORING hip hop, testerone and murder fueled empty rhymes of today.
Take the whole family. When's the last time BLACK PEOPLE could say that? All will have a GOOD time and ENJOY! It will be crowded, so come early.

If you expect to see your good ol bang - bang, shootem up, sex, sex, violent or sick humor movie? Dont think of coming to see this one... Now if you want a refreshing, entertaining good for the times movie that take you to real music, real singing? This is it! A little 5 Heartbeat and Tyler Perry musical like movie with real singers, real acting, this is a must see... I loved this movie from beginnig to end and I may see it again before it's put on D.V.D.. Ms celiaherrera12, I think you missed the target on this movie. Just for a couple of hours, it was good to see no one shot or murdered by another brother or sister, no disrespect of our sisters with with the name calling, or a bunch of big booty hoes showing off what they got. The women in this movie were beautiful and kept it clean. Can you name hardly any black movie like this today that isn't by Tyler Perry or others like him?

Yes, before seeing it I knew that it was a rendition of the musical. I guess after all these years of hearing about this movie; I was hoping to see a modern day Sparkle. I would have settled for the Jackson 5 movie, the Temptations movie, What’s Love or the Five Heartbeats. But this didn’t compare to those at all. Yes, it was a great break out role for Jennifer Hudson but I think that maybe they should have let Deena Jones role be a break out for someone as well. We know that Ms. Beyoncé Knowles can do her thing. But I just didn’t feel her playing this part (not her acting but maybe her having to hold back and give the light to some else, we used to seeing her in the lead role front and center). It was kind of like the pot calling the kettle black in my opinion. I’ll most likely buy it when it comes out on DVD, but they can’t get another $8.25 at the movies.

Dream girls was very well done in my oppinion. The movie was once a broadway play therefore if you've ever seem a broadway play in NYC you would know that singing, and acting go hand and hand. It's unfortunate that some 13 year olds attended the movie just to see Beyonce as I'm sure some adults did as well. It felt really good to see true actors acting and new commers getting the chance that most only dream of. I will be purchasing my DVD copy as soon as it comes out. The movie did everything it was supposed to do by staying true to the origional play. If you check out some the older movies that did very well Oliver Twist, Oklahoma, West Side Story those were movies that were in theater a long time ago and were musicals that have helped shape American Cinema and music. Remember everyone it doesn't hurt to step outside the box and experience something different.
